I’m The Villain
Every good story has a hero and a villain. Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago, John McClane and Hans Gruber just to name a few.
But what about the story of your life? Are you the hero or the villain? Is there a difference? How many consecutive questions can I ask? Seriously though, it is interesting to think about—one moment you may be portrayed as the hero and in the next you’re thought of as a villain.
Some of us may be depicted as a villain without ever being the wiser. Paraphrasing a quote I saw the other day; you need to be comfortable being the villain in someone else’s story. There was more to it, but the gist of the notion was sometimes people will portray you in whatever way bolsters their narrative. And when others represent you when you’re not around it may not always be in the best light.
When we’re available for everyone and always say yes, people like us. We’re the hero. When we set boundaries and say no, we often become the villain in someone else’s story. We must remember though, if we’re living a good life, we don’t need to concern ourselves with other’s opinions.
As I’ve gotten older, the number of people’s opinions I care about has shrunk drastically. I had to learn the hard way I was wasting my energy trying to be seen by others in a positive light. What I should’ve been doing was putting my focus toward being the best version of myself and letting the chips fall where they may.
If saying no at times isn’t well received, I’m the villain. If setting boundaries to balance life isn’t what other’s want, I’m the villain. If wanting to be the best version of myself makes others angry, I’m the villain.
What about you? Are you going to be a villain?
